Many people say that buying and owning a home is one of the biggest and most important decisions you make in your life. However, I would argue the more important decision is taking steps to keep your valuables - both family and physical belongings - safe and secure in that home after you move in.
Home Safety
If you have children or pets, childproof / petproof your home.
Keep medicines and cleaning supplies in locked cabinets or out of reach.
Ensure your blinds and curtains are not potential choking hazards.
Keep them away from heaters and fireplaces.
Install a hand railing on all staircases.
Shovel and clear your driveway and walkway in winter to prevent falls.
Each level of your home should have a working smoke detector. Test them often and change batteries if battery operated. Know at least 2 escape routes out of your home in case of fire.
Install carbon monoxide detectors.
Never overload electrical sockets or power bars.
Do not used damaged or worn appliances.
Be cautious when cooking or using the stove.
Inspect / clean your fireplace or wood stove yearly.
Make sure all exterior exhaust vents are clear of debris and snow.
Regularly clean dryer vent.
Take extra caution when completing Do It Yourself home projects, working with tools, lawnmowers or snowblowers.
Keep BBQs and firepits a safe distance from your home. Check local bylaws for firepit rules and burn permissions or bans.
Home Security
DID YOU CHANGE THE LOCKS WHEN YOU MOVED IN? If not, it is always a good idea to do so after purchasing a home.
Before leaving your home, lock all doors and windows. Always lock the connecting door to your house from your garage.
Install and use a home security system if you travel frequently or live in a private setting where you home is not easily visible to neighbours or the road.
When going on vacation, have a family member, friend or trusted neighbour check regularly on your house and pick up any flyers left at the door. Make your home look lived in by setting timed lights. Don’t forget to arrange for snow clearing if you will be away during winter.
Be careful what you post online while you are away.
Secure sliding glass doors to your deck or backyard.
Keep extremely precious items in a safety deposit box.
Record all serial numbers.
